I had always been interested in Saudi Arabia since seeing Lawrence of Arabia (1962) as a teenager starring Peter O'Toole as T E Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, and Alec Guinness as Prince Faisal. Saudi Arabia only started issuing tourists visas in 2013.
It was time to visit. My ambitions had expanded to cross from the Arabian Sea, a branch of the Indian Ocean along the Gulf and through the countries that are located on the peninsula. I wanted to compare and contrast the different cultures, castles and cuisines of the Arabian peninsula, despite the heat and the scorpions.
My finishing point would be crossing from Islamic countries to Judaism, from Jordan to Israel, to another totally different culture, history and religion on a nostalgic journey to reach the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
