Archives of Ash (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798189879357)

When an eleven-second deepfake clears one innocent teenager only to expose something far more disturbing, digital investigator Rhys Maren finds himself following a trail that should never exist. Hidden inside the training data of a modern artificial intelligence system are recordings from the 1940s. Voices that were never meant to survive, including one he recognises immediately. It belongs to his grandmother, dead for more than forty years.

The investigation leads Rhys into a forgotten wartime programme known only as Section Y-9, where young Wrens, scientists and intelligence officers were tasked with recording the voices of soldiers, civilians and refugees. Official records reveal almost nothing. The buildings have disappeared. The people who knew the truth are long gone. Yet somehow fragments of those recordings have resurfaced inside one of Britain's most advanced AI systems, with consequences reaching far beyond a single criminal case.

As Rhys uncovers hidden archives, buried secrets and the extraordinary work of ordinary people during the Second World War, he begins to realise that some records were preserved for reasons no one has fully understood. The closer he comes to the truth, the more he must confront his own family's past and a question that reaches across eighty years: what happens when history is not merely remembered, but unknowingly taught to the machines shaping our future?

Blending historical mystery with contemporary technology, Archives of Ash is an investigation into memory, evidence and the enduring power of the human voice. It explores how the past can survive in unexpected places, and why the stories we choose to preserve may one day shape far more than our understanding of history.
