As the Crow Flies (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025288505)

"As the Crow Flies" is a gripping historical adventure that transports readers to the rugged landscape of the early nineteenth-century American frontier. Set during the transformative years following the Louisiana Purchase, the narrative follows the ambitious expedition of young Lieutenant Zebulon Pike as he undertakes a perilous journey to explore the upper reaches of the Mississippi River. Tasked with establishing an American presence and finding the elusive source of the great waterway, Pike and his men must navigate not only the physical challenges of the wilderness but also the complex political and social dynamics of the region.

The story masterfully weaves historical fact with compelling fiction, focusing on the interactions between the explorers and the Native American tribes, particularly the Sioux and the Ojibwe. Through the eyes of its characters, the book explores themes of courage, diplomacy, and the clash of cultures during a pivotal era of westward expansion. Cornelia Meigs captures the vastness of the American landscape and the spirit of discovery that defined a nation in its infancy. "As the Crow Flies" remains a significant work of historical fiction, offering a vivid window into the trials and triumphs of those who first charted the unknown territories of the North American interior.
