This book has two aims: to introduce new readers to the riches of Old French storytelling and the culture from which it arose and, secondly, to suggest a way out of the impasse apparent in current criticism of Aucassin et Nicolete. Each chapter of the book begins with an English version of a section of the Old French text. This is followed by an analysis of the corresponding passage of the original text using the English version as a point of reference. Many of the text's poetic structures survive translation and it is in these that the discussion finds its point of departure.

The Author: Roger Pensom was born in 1939. He was educated at Manchester University where he received the degrees of BA and M.A., specializing in Old French language and literature and linguistics. He was appointed in 1966 to a lectureship at Exeter University from which he received a doctorate in 1980. He is presently University Lecturer in Old French Language and Literature in the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Hertford College. He has published The Literary Technique of the Chanson de Roland (Geneva, 1982), Reading Béroul's Tristran (Berne, 1995), Accent and metre in French (Berne, 1997) and articles on topics in French language and literature.
