Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis is a satirical novel that explores the emptiness of middle-class American life in the 1920s. The story follows George F. Babbitt, a successful real estate agent in the fictional city of Zenith. Outwardly, Babbitt seems to embody the ideal American businessman-materialistic, conformist, and proud of his social standing. However, beneath the surface, he struggles with feelings of dissatisfaction and restlessness.
Babbitt attempts to rebel against societal expectations by dabbling in liberal politics and having an affair, but his rebellion is short-lived. Ultimately, he retreats back into conformity, realizing the cost of nonconformity in a society obsessed with appearances and success. The novel critiques consumerism, blind patriotism, and the pressures to conform, offering a powerful portrait of early 20th-century American life.
