Bahuda Yatra: When the Chariots Return (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798188777890)

As thousands gather on the Bada Danda awaiting the return of Lord Jagannath, three families from very different social backgrounds arrive in Puri. Young history lecturer Aarav Mishra returns after years abroad. Wealthy businessman Mahendra Pattnaik comes with his influential family. Nearby, flower seller Madhabi Das prepares garlands with her widowed mother. Everyone believes they have come to witness the Lord's return.

Inside the Pattnaik household, appearance matters more than affection. Every meal has rules. Every conversation has expectations. Mahendra believes reputation is inherited. His daughter Ananya quietly questions whether kindness deserves a place beside tradition.

Madhabi's flowers decorate temples, but society barely notices the hands that weave them. Despite poverty, she values dignity over wealth. She becomes an unexpected guide for pilgrims seeking the true meaning of devotion.

Aarav has studied civilizations across Europe. Yet returning to Puri reminds him that manners are not measured by polished speech but by humility. He reconnects with forgotten childhood memories and old friendships.

The Bada Danda becomes its own living character. Pilgrims, saints, vendors, politicians, tourists, and beggars all share the same road. Status disappears beneath dust, sweat, and devotion.Every person carries an invisible story.

An unexpected accident during preparations forces strangers to help one another. Old prejudices begin to crack. The wealthy depend on the poor. The educated learn from the uneducated. No one leaves unchanged.

A misunderstanding between the Pattnaik family and Madhabi exposes hidden class prejudice. Aarav challenges the belief that respect belongs only to wealth. The chapter explores how true manners begin with listening.

Inspired by the traditional story of Goddess Lakshmi awaiting Jagannath's return, relationships throughout the novel mirror themes of waiting, pride, and reconciliation.

Several families confront emotional distances that have lasted for years.

Heavy rain delays the procession.

Sheltering together, strangers share memories, regrets, and dreams.

Secrets emerge. Old rivalries soften. Friendships quietly begin.

The Bahuda procession begins. Thousands pull the sacred ropes. Rich and poor stand shoulder to shoulder. The symbolic act reveals that society moves forward only when everyone shares the burden.

Forgiveness becomes more difficult than confession. Love appears where pride once stood. Several broken relationships find unexpected healing.

As the chariots approach the temple, each character faces a personal decision.

Lord Jagannath returns to the temple. But the greater return happens within the people. Mahendra apologizes. Ananya chooses her own path.

Flowers bloom again. The families gather one last time on the Grand Road. They realize Bahuda was never merely about the Lord returning to His temple. It was about people returning to kindness. Returning to truth. Returning to one another.

"The greatest journey is not from Gundicha Temple to Srimandir. It is the journey from pride to humility, from judgment to compassion, and from appearance to character. Every Bahuda asks the same question: When the Lord returns, will our hearts be ready to receive Him?"
