Banshay: Burma's Ancient Martial Traditions of Sword and Staff Warfare: Why This Art Stayed Hidden for Centuries (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798316139798)

This book tells the true story of Burma's fighting arts and the people who kept them alive. It begins by explaining how warriors and soldiers developed these combat skills many generations ago. When foreign rulers took control of Burma, they banned these traditional fighting methods. But Burmese teachers refused to let their arts disappear. They found clever ways to continue training in secret - sometimes hiding fighting techniques in dances or everyday work movements.

The book describes how families quietly passed down their knowledge from parents to children, even when this was dangerous. It explains how Buddhist monks helped preserve the fighting arts by practicing them in temples. After Burma regained independence, people could practice openly again, but they faced new problems. Many young people became more interested in modern sports than old fighting styles. Teachers had to work hard to show why these traditions still mattered.

Today, these Burmese fighting arts are practiced in many countries around the world. The book shows how they have changed as different people learned them, while still keeping their most important ideas. The writing uses clear, simple language to tell this true story of cultural survival. Readers will learn how ordinary people protected their heritage through difficult times, and why these ancient fighting arts remain valuable in today's world. This is a story about history, tradition, and the determination of people to preserve what is important to them.
