Central to this development is the work of Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-62), whose textbooks profoundly influenced later generations of German philosophers. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), in particular, lectured from Baumgarten's textbooks, including those on moral and legal philosophy, for well over thirty years. Following the recent English translation of Baumgarten's key works, this volume is the first comprehensive reappraisal of the relationship between his and Kant's thoughts on the grounding principles of moral philosophy.

Courtney D. Fugate is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University, Tallahassee. Previously, he earned his PhD at KU Leuven's Institute of Philosophy in Belgium, and held posts at The American University in Cairo, The American University of Beirut, and Emory University. His work focuses on Kant and Kant's predecessors going back to Leibniz and Thomasius.

John Hymers is Associate Professor of Philosophy at La Salle University in Philadelphia, where he teaches modern philosophy and ethics. He earned his PhD at KU Leuven's Institute of Philosophy in Belgium. His work focuses on Alexander Baumgarten, ethics, and the philosophy of religion.
