Before Abraham: Creation, Civilization, and the Human Condition in Genesis (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781069407740)

Before Abraham, before Sinai, before Israel became a people, Genesis begins with humanity.

The first eleven chapters of Beresheet, the Book of Genesis, are among the most powerful and mysterious passages ever written. They do not begin with laws, rituals, kings, temples, or nations. They begin with creation, human consciousness, moral freedom, temptation, shame, violence, exile, survival, covenant, language, empire, diversity, and the fragile foundations of civilization itself.

In this engaging and thought-provoking book, Ira Bernard Teich returns to these ancient stories through a deeply Jewish lens, while writing for readers of every background. He explores the timeless narratives of Creation, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Flood, the rainbow covenant, the Tower of Babel, and the birth of nations - not as childhood Bible stories, but as profound reflections on the human condition.

Why does the Torah begin with the creation of the world rather than with the birth of the Jewish people? What does it mean to be created in the image of God? Why does humanity so quickly fall into envy, violence, corruption, and arrogance? Why does God ask Adam, "Where are you?" and Cain, "Where is your brother?" Why does civilization repeatedly rise - and repeatedly threaten to collapse under the weight of its own ambition?

Drawing on Jewish tradition, biblical interpretation, rabbinic wisdom, history, philosophy, psychology, and moral reflection - this book shows how Genesis speaks not only to faith, but to politics, family, power, responsibility, identity, truth, and the future of civilization.

At its heart, this is a book about questions. Judaism has never been afraid of questions; indeed, questioning is one of its deepest spiritual and intellectual traditions. Through that ancestral lens, Teich invites readers to see Beresheet not as a closed ancient text, but as a living conversation - one that still confronts every generation with its most urgent moral challenges.

Accessible, passionate, and intellectually rich, this book is for anyone who has ever wondered why the Bible begins as it does, why these stories still endure, and why the first chapters of Genesis continue to shape Jewish thought, Western civilization, and the universal search for meaning.

Genesis does not merely tell us where we came from.
It asks us who we are.
It asks what we have become.
And it asks what kind of civilization we still have the courage to build.
