Before Columbus: A Reader's Guide to Viking Exploration and Encounters in North America (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798170659265)

What if everything you thought about Columbus was incomplete?

Five hundred years before Columbus reached the Caribbean, Norse explorers sailed west from Greenland and set foot on the shores of North America. They built a camp, traded with indigenous peoples, and struggled to survive in a land that was both generous and unforgiving. Their story is one of the great overlooked chapters in the history of exploration and it is completely true.

Before Columbus: A Reader's Guide to Viking Exploration and Encounters in North America takes you on a documentary-style journey through the evidence, from the medieval Icelandic sagas that preserved the memory of Vinland to the archaeological excavations that proved the sagas were not mythology but history.

Inside this reader's guide, you will discover:

- The Ships and the Sailors - How the Norse built the knarr, navigated without compasses, and crossed the treacherous North Atlantic

- The Sagas and the Truth - What Eirik's Saga and The Greenlanders' Saga actually say and where they contradict each other

- The Three Lands - The real locations of Helluland, Markland, and the elusive Vinland and why the name is still debated

- Leif Eriksson's Expedition - The first deliberate voyage to Vinland, the winter camp, and why Leif chose to return east

- L'Anse aux Meadows - What the excavations revealed: turf houses, ironworking, boat repairs, and the daily life of a Norse outpost

- The Skr lings - The indigenous peoples who met the Norse and why the encounters turned from trade to conflict

- Thorfinn Karlsefni's Gamble - The most ambitious expedition, the bull that sparked a war, and the decision to abandon Vinland

- Climate and Collapse - How the Medieval Warm Period enabled the voyages and how the Little Ice Age closed the window forever

- The Vinland Map Hoax - The modern forgery that fooled the world for decades and what it reveals about our hunger for Viking history
