Before Elsewhere (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781068560095)

Miles W. Hewitt travelled slowly enough for the world to answer back...

Over the past forty years, the art of travel has shifted from endurance to efficiency, from overland grit to algorithmic ease. Yet in tracing one wanderer's path across decades, a different story emerges - one in which travel remains an apprenticeship in attention.

When Miles first left Newcastle in the 1970s, the journey itself was the destination. Buses lurched across Anatolia, the Orient Express stitched Europe to Asia, and borders were crossed with patience and paper visas. Encounters were unfiltered: Afghan proverbs learned by firelight, Persian taarof decoded in Tehran drawing rooms, blue-tiled mosques shimmering in Istanbul heat. Travel demanded stamina, humility, and time.

By the 1990s and early 2000s, the world had accelerated. Global commerce opened doors once closed to outsiders. Miles the traveller became both observer and participant, navigating business and romance in riot-scarred Mexico City, on factory floors in Puebla and jade-toned boardrooms in Chengdu - adventure no longer meant distance alone.

In recent decades, Europe's hidden riverways, Scotland's vertiginous passes, and Portugal's fishing docks reveal a quieter evolution for Miles: slow travel as a counterculture. Sharing spider crab in Nazaré or lavender harvests in Provence becomes an act of resistance against haste.

Across four decades, the tools have changed - budget airlines, digital maps, instant translation - but the art endures. It lives in conversation, in his sensory detail, in returning often enough to see transformation. True travel, it seems, is less about miles covered than about worlds entered, patiently and fully.

Miles' style throughout is immersive and relational. He does not skim surfaces; he lingers. Learning social codes and culinary rituals. His writing favours sensory precision - the scorch of spice, the musk of animals, the metallic tang of desert wind - anchoring reflection in live detail.

Above all, Miles travels without spectacle. His method blends curiosity with humility, business acumen with wanderer's instinct. The result is prose that feels earned rather than curated, long conversations, and a lifelong commitment to inhabiting the world rather than merely passing through it.
