Before the First Spear: The Great Filter Between Animal Cognition and Technological Civilization (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798187805280)

For more than half a billion years, Earth produced eyes, brains, societies, communication, and countless forms of animal cognition. Yet only one lineage developed recorded language, workshops, industry, and a planetary technosphere. Why?

Before the First Spear argues that the missing link between cognition and civilization is not simply a larger brain, but a rare convergence: a body able to manipulate its surroundings, prolonged parental care, a capacity inherited from an earlier habitat, ecological disruption that releases that capacity for a new use, a physical shortfall tools can compensate for, and an immediate payoff that makes the first technique worth repeating.

Bringing together human evolution, material culture, fire, agriculture, the Drake equation, and the Fermi paradox, Jairo Martins introduces the Initiator Organism Hypothesis. The result is a rigorous, accessible investigation of the Great Filter: the Universe may contain many living worlds, yet very few animals able to begin the path toward a technological civilization.
