Beginner Reading Ladders: Reading Fluency and Comprehension (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798903299638)

Your child can sound out every word. So why can't they read a book?

They're not lazy. They're not "not ready yet." They're stuck between two rungs that are too far apart.

Most beginners don't stall because a text is too hard. They stall because the next book changes four things at once - longer words, longer sentences, denser pages, and background knowledge nobody taught them. That's why "just find something easier" keeps failing: easier books are either insultingly babyish or secretly harder.
Beginner Reading Ladders gives you the missing middle steps.

A reading ladder is a short, ordered sequence of texts in which each rung changes exactly one variable. This book teaches you to build them - from books you already own, worksheets, and text you write yourself. No program to buy. No subscription.

Inside, you'll learn how to:
- Diagnose in 15 minutes whether the stall is decoding, fluency, or meaning - using three simple checks
- Build a 6-10 rung sequence that moves one variable at a time
- Apply the 95% rule to accept or reject any book in under a minute, standing in a library aisle
- Run a 20-minute session with a word-for-word script for what to say when your reader gets stuck
- Write your own decodable text in 15 minutes when nothing on the shelf fits
- Catch false progress - memorization disguised as reading - before it costs you a month
- Fade your support on purpose, so the reader climbs without you

You'll follow four real readers - a slow-but-accurate six-year-old, a picture-guesser, a multilingual learner with thin vocabulary, and an adult who won't read aloud - and see exactly which variable each ladder moved, and what changed in six weeks.

And you'll get the honest limits, too: this is not a phonics curriculum and not a diagnosis. Chapter 9 tells you precisely when to stop climbing and refer out.

For teachers, tutors, homeschool parents, and adult-literacy volunteers.

Build one ladder for one reader this week. Scroll up and start climbing.
