Behind a Watteau Picture: A Fantasy in Verse, in One Act (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025295428)

"Behind a Watteau Picture" is an evocative one-act fantasy written in verse that brings to life the delicate and melancholic world of Rococo artistry. Inspired by the pastoral and theatrical paintings of Jean-Antoine Watteau, Robert Emmons Rogers crafts a lyrical narrative that explores the boundaries between art and reality. The play captures the essence of the 'fÃate galante'-a genre of painting depicting the elegant leisure of the French aristocracy-reimagining these static figures as living beings with their own dreams, desires, and existential questions.

Written during the early 20th century, this verse drama stands as a testament to the period's fascination with historical aesthetics and poetic performance. The rhythmic structure of the dialogue enhances the dreamlike atmosphere, transporting the audience into a stylized landscape where beauty and artifice intertwine. This work is an essential piece for those interested in short-form drama, poetic literature, and the intersection of visual arts and theater. Rogers' masterful use of language evokes the fragile elegance of the 18th century, making "Behind a Watteau Picture" a compelling exploration of human emotion reflected through a classical lens.
