Beijing - The AI Capital of Intelligence: How the City Generates AI for China (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798188531799)

The Imperial Foundations of Learning

Long before anyone in Beijing spoke of neural networks, the city had already spent centuries perfecting a different kind of intelligence machine. For most of the last six hundred years, the imperial examination system drew the most brilliant minds of a vast empire toward a single destination. Scholars from every province studied, memorized, and competed for the chance to sit the highest examinations in the capital, and the best of them stayed on to serve the state.

The result was a city with an unusual gravitational pull. Talent did not merely pass through Beijing; it accumulated there, generation after generation, in the ministries, academies, and great households of the capital.

The idea that the nation's cleverest people belong in Beijing, working in some fashion for the nation, is far older than the People's Republic. It is one of the deepest cultural foundations of the city's modern AI industry.

What distinguishes Beijing's academic engine is not only the research it produces but the ease with which laboratories turn into companies.

The pattern repeats across decades. A professor builds a research group; the group builds a system that works; the system becomes a startup with the professor as chief scientist and the students as founding engineers. Zhipu AI, born from Tsinghua's Knowledge Engineering Group, is the canonical AI-era example, but the model is as old as Founder Group's emergence from PKU's typesetting laboratory.

Then laboratories became companies - then success was immediate. Then came the Chinese Governments Money - lots of it. This leads to Global Success. Then came more Government Money ---- and so it goes ....
