Belisarius: The Last of the Romans - Tome 1 (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798257695766)

Belisarius: The Last of the Romans is a historical novel that reconstructs the trajectory of one of the greatest generals of the Byzantine Empire under the rule of Justinian I. Narrated in the first person by Procopius of Caesarea, the work follows decisive campaigns, internal conflicts, and power struggles that defined the fate of the Mediterranean in the 6th century.
The narrative covers central episodes such as the Battle of Dara, the defeat at Callinicum, the Nika revolt in Constantinople, the reconquest of Africa against the Vandals, and the long campaign in Italy against the Ostrogoths. More than just reconstructing military events, the book investigates the logic of imperial power, the instability of alliances, and the permanent tension between command, obedience, and political survival.
By adopting Procopius' voice, the text articulates two complementary dimensions: the historical account and the critical awareness of the writer. The narrator not only records facts but questions the very act of narrating, exposing the differences between what is seen, what is understood, and what is decided to be preserved. In this movement, the book engages with the historian's classic works, such as History of the Wars and Secret History, incorporating their contrasts and ambiguities.
Belisarius emerges not as an idealized hero, but as a complex figure, subject to victories that do not consolidate and defeat that do not fully define him. His actions reveal an empire that no longer fully controls its own borders, where each conquest requires new administration and each success carries the risk of political suspicion.
With precise language and dense narrative construction, Belisarius: The Last of the Romans combines rigorous historical research with literary reflection on memory, power, and writing. The work is of interest to readers of ancient and medieval history as well as those seeking a profound narrative about strategy, politics, and the human condition.
This is a book about war, but above all, about what remains when the war ends.
