Below the Silence (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798233184772)

When the research vessel Orpheus detects impossible sonar returns above a newly discovered Pacific trench, acoustics specialist Dr. Mika Solis notices something that keeps her awake: the signal is coming back cleaner than it went out.

As if something below has corrected it.

As if something below has been listening.

What follows is fifteen days of first contact - not the first contact of science fiction's imagining, but something stranger and more unsettling: a correspondence, built word by word across five hundred million years of separate evolution, between the crew of a research vessel and an intelligence that has been in the deep ocean since before the word for ocean existed. An intelligence that has a name for their ship. That sends its eye to their window. That knocks on their hull at night in the pattern of their own sonar.

An intelligence that has been trying to warn them.

And an intelligence that will not let them leave until they understand why.

Below The Silence is a novel about first contact, deep time, and the terrifying patience of something that has been waiting in the dark for a very long time.

The ocean has always known what was in it.

Now we do too.
