O. Henry (born William Sydney Porter, 1862-1910) was an American writer best known for his short stories featuring clever wordplay, warm humor, and surprise endings. Born in North Carolina, he worked a variety of jobs--including bank clerk, journalist, and ranch hand--which strongly influenced the characters and settings of his fiction. Much of his writing depicts everyday life in early twentieth-century America, particularly in New York City, where many of his most famous stories are set. O. Henry published hundreds of short stories during his career, and his work remains widely read for its wit, humanity, and memorable twist endings. The prestigious O. Henry Award for short fiction is named in his honor.
