Beware! This Is Your Life (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798182731300)

Mike Pelligrino already survived one nightmare by the time this story really gets going. Falsely accused of robbing an apartment that belonged to a woman he'd been casually dating, he spent a year fighting the charge, arrested, interrogated, and finally put in front of a jury in Rhode Island with his whole future riding on their verdict. He walked out acquitted, but not exactly whole. He rebuilds in Florida with a new job, a new relationship, and a careful, imperfect peace with the alcoholic father who made his childhood a minefield.

Then comes an afternoon that should mean nothing. Mike has a rare day off and slips into a nearly empty theater to catch a matinee he knows nothing about, called Beware! This Is Your Life. It opens sweet, black-and-white and nostalgic, a picture-perfect 1950s family with kids on bikes and a station wagon in the driveway. But somewhere in the second reel, things stop feeling like a movie and start feeling like a memory. The names match. The house matches. The father drinking behind a closed bedroom door matches. What starts as an eerie coincidence turns into something Mike can't look away from: his own childhood, his own trauma, playing out in front of him on a screen he can't stop and can't leave.

Marshall Cantone writes this one in a voice that feels like a guy telling you the story over a beer, blunt, funny in places it probably shouldn't be, and completely unguarded when it counts. It's part courtroom drama, part coming-of-age story, and part something closer to a Twilight Zone episode, and by the final pages it becomes something else entirely: a reckoning with what it actually does to a person to grow up in a house where you never knew which version of your father was coming home.

If you're drawn to stories about the long reach of family trauma, addiction, and the things we bury without realizing we never actually buried them, this one will stay with you.
