The Korea-Japan summit between President Lee Jae-myung and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi (May 19-20, 2026) is being held in Andong, President Lee's hometown.
This Andong summit is a reciprocal visit following President Lee's trip to Nara Prefecture, Japan-the hometown of Prime Minister Takaichi-last January. In line with this reciprocal diplomatic approach, which marks the first-ever mutual visits to each other's hometowns by the leaders of both nations, Andong's historical and cultural assets are being actively utilized.
Andong is a highly symbolic diplomatic venue, having previously hosted Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom (1999) and the former U.S. Presidents Bush, both father and son (2005 and 2009). As such, it was chosen as the key stage for fostering emotional rapport and cultural exchange between the two leaders. The text introduces the history and cultural tourism of Andong, and provides travel information on major attractions across South Korea, including Andong.
