Beyond the Dashboard: From Data Rich to Business Value Through REAL Decisions (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798898161361)

Turn dashboards, reports, and analytics into trusted tools people actually use to make better business decisions.

Most organizations don't have a data problem; they have a decision problem. Companies invest in business intelligence tools, data analytics platforms, KPI dashboards, data teams, AI, data governance, and data literacy programs. Yet, critical decisions still get made through hierarchy, habit, intuition, and whoever sounds most confident in the room. Using real-world stories from retail, CPG, logistics, financial services, technology, and automotive organizations, Lucy Nemes shows how data becomes decoration rather than direction, and why even accurate dashboards can quietly end up in the dashboard graveyard.

Diagnose the four patterns that keep data from creating business value: organizational misalignment, strategic ambiguity, operational gaps, and cultural lag. Analyze why data teams are brought in too late, why stakeholders ask for visibility without naming the decision, why no one owns what happens when metrics move, and why people often lack the confidence to challenge numbers, assumptions, or senior opinions. Evaluate your own data culture, as the book reveals how these patterns reinforce each other, creating more dashboards, meetings, reports, and noise without changing what happens next.

Apply the REAL Framework, a practical model built around Relationship, End-goal, Accountability, and Literacy, to reconnect data with decision-making. Build stronger partnerships between business and data teams, define the decision before building the dashboard, assign ownership to the metrics that matter, and develop genuine data fluency instead of one-size-fits-all training. Design a culture where analytics, business intelligence, KPIs, data storytelling, data strategy, and AI-generated insights support action rather than simply making the organization look data-driven.

Use the Field Guide to put the ideas to work with the REAL Diagnostic, Clarity Workshop, Decision Backward Brief, Dashboard Design Workshop, Action Brief, Ownership Map, and Fluency Assessment and Map. Whether you are a data leader, analyst, business executive, product manager, consultant, or transformation leader, Beyond the Dashboard gives you a clear way to move from data-rich to decision-ready, helping teams stop arguing about the numbers and start deciding what to do with them.

I've built my share of dashboards nobody opened, so Lucy's stories felt like she'd been quietly watching my career and taking notes. She tells it through moments we all recognize and from those she pulls the four patterns that stall data initiatives and the REAL framework that fixes them. And she doesn't stop at the idea, she hands you the diagnostics, workshops, and templates to act on, which leaves wonderfully little room for excuses to not act. In a world bolting AI onto decisions nobody agreed on, this is the human groundwork that makes it worth having.

What makes this book stand out is its honest and practical approach. Rather than focusing on theory, Lucy draws on real-life examples to illustrate common challenges and provides concrete tools and guidance to help organizations embed data into decision-making processes early on and turn insights into action. An insightful and highly practical read for anyone looking to close the gap between having data and using it to make better decisions.
