The Texas state Constitution of 1876 mandated that each one of its county sheriffs is elected to a term of four years. Thus, these law enforcement officers occupy a decidedly political position, subject to the whims and winds of their constituents. Sheriff Terry Miles, a geologist who has settled into an isolated pocket of Texas and was coaxed by his retiring predecessor to give it a chance, finds himself in such a position. Circumstances have him laying claim to the jail and its rooms, resources and responsibilities, eager to seek reelection. Indeed, Terry Miles' respect for his adopted county is beyond question, as is his love for a host of icons from the past.
That Terry is open for an encounter with a like-minded, eligible lady goes without saying, though the chances for such an encounter in this sparse land are a bit remote. Yet, who knows? An invasion of outsiders from the financial center of the universe loom over his reelection campaign, as does an ongoing mystery of a mischievous perpetrator. Much more might occur beyond the Pecos, the promise being that there are no promises.
