Beyond the Worksheet: A Practice Guide for Teaching Gerunds & Infinitives (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798258933676)

Unlocking the FMU Blueprint addresses the chronic frustration of ESL teachers: students who pass grammar tests but fail to use the same structures in real conversation. Centered on the Form-Meaning-Use (FMU) framework, this manuscript provides a systematic overhaul of how gerunds and infinitives are taught. Instead of relying on dry, arbitrary lists, the book introduces cognitive-friendly tools like the 'PIGS ARE DEAD' mnemonic and the 'Memory vs. Duty' framework. It guides teachers through 15 chapters of progressive instruction-from foundational spelling rules to advanced perfect and passive forms. Each unit emphasizes inductive learning, where students discover patterns through storytelling and communicative tasks like the 'Life Advice Column' or 'Photo Narratives.' By shifting the focus from rote memorization to authentic communicative purpose, the book ensures that grammar becomes a tool for genuine expression rather than a hurdle to fluency. It is both a theoretical guide for second language acquisition and a practical 'Monday morning' resource for educators looking to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world application.
