As you transition into the advanced technical forges of the Master's modules, carry these reflections to bridge the gap between the screen and the law:
Am I teaching my team to think, or just to obey? If your OOW cannot explain the "Why" behind a maneuver, they will never have the competency to act as your "Safety Net" when you are distracted by a VTS call or a pilot disembarkation.Am I holding a "Right" or a "Responsibility"? Holding the "Right of Way" is not a bulletproof shield; if the Distance to Collision (DTC) is vanishing, standing on into a wreck will result in 80% liability for your own ship.Is my bridge a "VHF Vacuum"? In the final 6 minutes of an approach, never prioritize a voice on a radio over the Relative Motion you see with your own eyes.Do I recognize the "Titanic Effect" in my own shiphandling? Are you issuing orders that the laws of physics cannot fulfill? Always ensure your 3-Minute Buffer allows for the massive inertia of your vessel's mass, regardless of the pilot's advice.
The final guardian of the ship is not the rulebook, but the Master who knows when the rules-and the situation-require the intervention of a seasoned, proactive instinct.
