Death is predictable, people not so much.
Penelope Callahan spends her days keeping her head down, literally and figuratively, as she probes the deceased to sort out what killed them, something her family isn't even remotely supportive of. Rather than acknowledging that she is a doctor, her father constantly reminds her that she doesn't try to keep people alive-no, she waits until it's too late and then deals with them after.
Growing up, she felt like an outsider in her family home, and it hasn't been any better on her infrequent visits back. Especially since she still isn't the thin daughter her mother wanted. So traveling across the country for her little brother's wedding, where all of her disapproving family will be, isn't exactly the highlight of her year.
The minute she arrives, the comments begin, making her feel like an intruder in everyone's lives. She wonders if it would be better if she just hopped on a plane and went back to her new home. Her new life.
Stepping outside to get some air-and away from a party she isn't wanted at, she runs into said little brother smoking a cigarette. Once she sends him back in, she gets some personal one-on-one time with his delinquent friend Liam, who may or may not have been asked to babysit her.
Better make the best of it.
