The year is 1943. Global war rages, killing millions... America is at war with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. Men are drafted at home for warfare, but American Blacks are generally restricted to menial tasks and are too often denied combat roles. However, beginning in that year, and unkwon to the general public, the U.S. Navy began a highly secret experiment to dertermine if an all-Black crew and officers could man a warship. The effort was classified. Two ships, the USS Mason (DE 529) and the PC 1264, were assigned the face of unforgiving and irrational racial stereotypes. This is the untold story of the two crews, each of which contributed to winning the war at a time when racial prejudice was rampant in America's armed forces. Their story, neglected in our history books, is a testament to the sacrifice of those young men who challenged discrimination in our military.
