Her two sisters, Iris and Megan, soon turn up on her doorstep, fleeing the blitz and destitution. She takes in four evacuee children, endeavouring to educate them and to help shape their lives. Over time, she comes to love them dearly and the very thought of having to hand them back once the war is over tugs at her heartstrings.
