Bucher plans to relocate Erich to a work camp as well as destroy Stefan's prominent family. As the evening progresses, Bucher has a change of plan and offers Erich an option to avoid work-camp and Stefan a way to save his family. It's a hard choice and either decision may be the wrong one. However, one of the young SS men under Bucher is outraged with what Bucher and his men are forcing on the two students and offers the young men yet another option. This story is told by Erich, who describes in detail the thirty-six hours that defined his and Stefan's life.
