Sal Manna, a journalist and writer who lives in west Calaveras County, is the Contributing Editor (History) of The Valley Springs News, for which he has been the author since 2006 of the "Something From Nothing" monthly local history series, which has been compiled in a series of magazine editions. He has also co-authored the Northern Calaveras County, Angels Camp and Copperopolis and Olives In California's Gold Country editions of Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series and has been published in the California Historical Society's quarterly journal. A graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, he is the Founder and President of the nonprofit Society for the Preservation of West Calaveras History, Inc. (SPWCH). Shannon Van Zant has been the Calaveras County Archivist since 2005. A resident of Angels Camp, she received her Master's degree in History from the California State University at Stanislaus and has since become an instructor in History for Columbia College in Tuolumne County and San Joaquin Delta College in San Joaquin County. She has provided historical research for and been thanked for her work in numerous publications, and was presented with the 2015 Richard Taylor Pioneer Award from the SWPCH, honoring individuals who have contributed to the preservation of local history.
