Britain's First Municipal Savings Bank: The Romance of a Great Achievement (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025320434)

"Britain's First Municipal Savings Bank; The Romance of a Great Achievement" is an insightful historical account detailing the rise and impact of the Birmingham Municipal Bank. Written by John Peter Hilton, this work explores the innovative establishment of a local government-run financial institution designed to encourage thrift and provide security for the working class during the early 20th century.

The narrative captures the ambitious spirit of the era, documenting the legislative battles, civic determination, and eventual triumph that led to the bank's status as a cornerstone of the community. Hilton frames the institution's growth as a significant social and economic milestone, illustrating how the bank transformed the financial habits of thousands of citizens. By focusing on the intersection of public service and private savings, the book provides a unique perspective on the evolution of British finance and the success of municipal enterprise. This work remains a valuable resource for readers interested in the history of banking, the development of urban social policy, and the economic history of the United Kingdom. It stands as a testament to a unique chapter in civic history where local government played a direct role in fostering financial resilience.
