Charles Hodge viewed Calvin's doctrine of the union of believers with Christ's humanity in the Lord's Supper as an uncongenial foreign element in Calvin's thought, having no root in the system. Ronald S. Wallace was for nearly thirty years a parish minister in several rural, town, and city parishes in Scotland. During this period he wrote 'Calvin's Doctrine of the Word and Sacrament' and 'Calvin's Doctrine of the Christian Life' (both currently reprinted by Geneva Divinity School Press), as well as several books of Biblical exposition. He then became professor of Biblical Theology at Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia, a post he held for thirteen years. He now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, and devotes his time to writing.
