Chivalry and Charity: Illustrated by the Lives of Bertrand Du Guesclin and John Howard is a book published in 1840 by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. The book explores the lives of two medieval knights, Bertrand Du Guesclin and John Howard, who were known for their chivalry and charitable acts. The book begins by discussing the concept of chivalry and its importance in medieval society. It then goes on to provide biographical information about Bertrand Du Guesclin, a French knight who fought in the Hundred Years' War. Du Guesclin was known for his bravery in battle and his commitment to defending the weak and oppressed. The book then turns to John Howard, an English knight who lived during the 15th century. Howard was also known for his chivalry and his commitment to helping the poor and needy. He is particularly remembered for his work in improving the conditions of prisoners in England. Throughout the book, the authors draw connections between the chivalric ideals of Du Guesclin and Howard and their charitable actions. They argue that these knights embodied the best of medieval society, and that their examples are still relevant today. The book is illustrated with engravings and includes a glossary of medieval terms. It provides an insightful look into the lives of two important historical figures and their contributions to the ideals of chivalry and charity. This Book Is In English. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
