Chromodynamic Dreaming: Why Seeing Colors Is Your Brain Performing Particle Physics (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798232111250)

Right now, as you read this, two entirely different color systems are running simultaneously inside your body.

In your eyes, three types of cone photoreceptors are comparing wavelengths of incoming light and encoding the result in three opponent channels: red against green, blue against yellow, neutral in the middle. Your visual cortex is constructing the experience of color from these three dimensions of information, enforcing neutrality when all three channels are balanced, and producing the rich perceptual world of hue and saturation from a cascade of neural mathematics you are never aware of.

In every atomic nucleus of every cell in your body, quarks are exchanging gluons at a ferocity that makes particle accelerators look sedate. The quarks come in three color charges: red, green, and blue. They combine in color-neutral triplets, enforcing a perfect balance of the three primaries. The mathematics that governs how they combine, the SU(3) symmetry group, is the same mathematical structure that governs how your three cone types produce the color space of human vision.

This is not a metaphor. The physicists who named quark color after visual color understood they were borrowing an analogy. What they did not fully appreciate is how deep the analogy runs.

In Chromodynamic Dreaming, theoretical physicist Prof. Thalion Mereweather-Solis develops the most surprising parallel in modern science: the structural identity between quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong nuclear force, and the mathematics of trichromatic color vision. Drawing on the real physics of quarks and gluons, the established neuroscience of opponent channels and color constancy, and the mathematical theory of SU(3) symmetry groups, he shows that both systems implement the same three-dimensional opponent representation, enforce the same neutrality conditions, possess the same two-dimensional chrominance structure, and share the same mathematical language of color primaries, complements, and mixing rules.

This book is not about an interesting coincidence. It is about what the coincidence reveals: that the same mathematical pattern appears in the most intimate of our sensory experiences and in the most fundamental theory of how matter is held together. The color you see when you look at a red rose is computed by the same mathematical grammar that the universe uses to confine quarks inside every proton in your body.

Chapter by chapter, Mereweather-Solis guides you through color vision and particle physics simultaneously, building the parallel with scientific precision and narrative momentum. You will understand why the color wheel is a lie and what the truth looks like. You will understand what asymptotic freedom is and why it has a visual analog. You will understand what confinement means and why your perception of color enforces its own version of it.

You have been performing particle physics every moment of your conscious life. This book explains exactly what you have been doing.
