Lakshmi Champak Vas, an erstwhile chief anaesthesiologist at Wadia Children's Hospital Mumbai, is a pioneer in pediatric regional anaesthesia. She introduced regional nerve blocks almost 40 years ago to make anaesthesia safer and to ensure complete relief from pain during anaesthesia and post-operative periods for infants and children. There has been a paradigm shift in Dr Vas's focus, i.e., from paediatric anaesthesia to pain management. She established Ashirvad Institute for Pain Management and Research (AIPMR) in 2005, one of the earliest pain management clinics in India. AIPMR is presently a post-graduate training centre, affiliated with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.
