The Author: Emil Klauprecht (1815-96), born in Mainz, came to the U.S. in 1832 during part of the immigration known at the Dreissiger, or Thirtyers. After establishing a lithography firm, he entered the field of German-American journalism, and published and edited several publications, including Der Deutsche Republikaner and Das Volksblatt. Klauprecht is best known for his chronicle of the Ohio Valley and its capital city, Cincinnati.
