Cinquillos and Seisillos Book N-1

by Jose Pardal

This book is designed to help trumpet players and modern musicians develop rhythmic control and flexibility through two powerful rhythmic cells: cinquillos (quintuplets) and seisillos (sextuplets). These rhythmic figures are widely used in contemporary music, jazz, Latin styles, and classical modern repertoire, providing both technical challenge and expressive richness.

The Role of Cinquillos and Seisillos

• Cinquillos (groups of five notes) introduce an asymmetrical division of the beat that demands precision and awareness of inner pulse.

• Seisillos (groups of six notes) expand the natural flow of triplets, creating longer and smoother rhythmic lines.

• Both figures push the performer to think beyond traditional duple or triple divisions, opening new possibilities for phrasing and improvisation.

Goals of this book

1. Develop technical accuracy by practicing quintuplets and sextuplets across registers.

2. Strengthen the internal sense of rhythm through progressive exercises.

3. Explore modern phrasing by combining these rhythmic cells with scales, arpeggios, and contemporary articulations.

4. Apply cinquillos and seisillos to musical contexts such as jazz improvisation, Latin grooves, and avant-garde trumpet repertoire.

Structure

• Section I: Introduction to cinquillos - simple patterns, articulation studies, and scale applications.

• Section II: Introduction to seisillos - smooth phrasing, long rhythmic flows, and register transitions.

• Section III: Mixed exercises combining both rhythms for advanced control.

• Section IV: Etudes and short musical pieces that integrate these rhythms in modern contexts.

Conclusion

Mastering cinquillos and seisillos not only strengthens rhythm and technique but also provides the trumpet player with a new rhythmic vocabulary. This book aims to be a practical and creative tool for students and professionals who want to expand their rhythmic imagination and bring a fresh energy to their music.
