Scientists solve puzzles and crack codes. They ask big questions and come up with amazing answers. And guess what? They're looking for people just like you to work with them. That's what it means to be a citizen scientist!
Citizen scientists study all sorts of things, from the bacteria hiding in our belly buttons to objects zooming around in outer space. They work with professional scientists to make discoveries, record data and build knowledge that helps all of us. You may not have specialized training, but you don't need it! All you need is curiosity about the world around you and an eagerness to take action.
Explore a wide range of community science projects, learn about the experiences of kids who have taken part in them and discover how to pick the best project for you. Whoever you are, wherever you live and whatever you're interested in, there are endless fun citizen science projects just waiting for your participation!
Frances Backhouse is an award-winning environmental journalist and author who found her way to writing through science. As a kid, she loved exploring nature. She climbed trees, went for long walks with her dog in the river valley near her home, raised monarch butterflies from caterpillars and made plaster casts of animal tracks. Adulthood brought new adventures as she earned a bachelor of science degree in zoology and went on to work as a park naturalist and a biologist. Frances has written four books in the Orca Wild series and six books for adults. She lives in Victoria, British Columbia, and loves spending time outdoors wherever she is.
Amanda Key is an illustrator and graphic designer from Nanaimo, British Columbia. Her art centers around the natural landscape of Vancouver Island and draws inspiration from her childhood spent finding flowers, hiking trails and spotting animals. With a strong focus on observation and natural science, each design project offers a chance to learn a bit more about her surroundings.
