Journalist and author Clark Cox, late of Rockingham, NC, wrote that the document of the Yankees invasion of Rockingham is the only known account of that invasion by a contemporary; he also wrote that the memoir of John A. Muse is one of the most vivid and colorful accounts of a confederate soldier that exists.

Jennie Kelly Muse, daughter and daughter-in-law of Civil War contemporaries, had the vision to document their memories of the war before their deaths. These documents are invaluable to Jennie's descendants and hopefully will be enjoyed by others. Jennie was the grandmother of my first husband, Charles A. Gunter. She died shortly before we met so I never met her in person. She left such a legacy of who she was through sheer documentation that today I love her memory and hold her in such high esteem.
