Clean Hands: A Vantage Mystery - Book 6: A Paris Art World Thriller: A Vermeer With a Missing Decade. A Dead Researcher. Sixty Million Euros. Document (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798255157914)

Between the canvas and the lining, someone hid documents.

The auction house has been on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré for a hundred and forty years. Invitation only. The lots are exquisite. The provenances are meticulous. Every painting has a story that has been verified, authenticated, and polished until it gleams. The catalogue is a masterpiece of certainty. Every line says: this is real, this is genuine, this is worth exactly what we say it is worth.

Except one lot.

A Vermeer with a ten-year gap in its provenance. Ten years during which the painting existed nowhere-no gallery, no collection, no insurance record, no customs declaration. A decade of silence in a history that is otherwise immaculate. The head of provenance research noticed the gap. She began asking questions. She was found dead in the restoration studio the following morning.

The sale continues in forty-eight hours. Sixty million euros does not wait for an investigation to conclude. The auction house hires Vantage to determine whether the death and the provenance gap are connected, and to resolve both before the hammer falls.

Rowan works the art world. The dealers, the collectors, the restorers, a community built on trust and authentication where the greatest skill is knowing which questions not to ask. Nadia works the auction house itself, where cooperation is enthusiastic and transparency is performed with the same precision as the catalogue descriptions. James examines the painting. Not the brushwork. The frame. The backing. The physical history of an object that has been handled, shipped, stored, and displayed across three centuries. Elliot follows the money through the provenance chain, purchases, sales, insurance claims and finds that the ten-year gap is not a gap. It is a door.

Between the canvas and the lining, someone hid documents. The painting is worth sixty million euros. The documents are worth considerably more. And the dead woman was not the first person to find them.

Clean Hands is the sixth book in A Vantage Mystery. In the art world, clean hands are the ones that have not been caught yet. Twenty standalone investigations. A team that notices what was left for them to find.
