Spencer Culbreth was born and raised in Frog Level, North Carolina, near Sandy Mush, Shingle Hollow, and the towns of Rutherfordton and Spindale. He majored in History at three different colleges. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Wofford College, his Master's Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Doctorate from Middle Tennessee State University. He served in Vietnam as a Captain in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a Professor and Administrator at Cleveland State Community College, in Cleveland, Tennessee, for thirty-seven years. His wife, Ann, was an Elementary School Teacher, Principal and Supervisor in the Cleveland City School System for forty years.
