Media companies are at a crossroads: join the digital evolution of the so-called cloud computing or - almost certainly - disappear. Cloud computing seems to be hype, a buzzword like so many in the world of technology and new media.

Although cloud computing is service oriented, the reality is that it comprises a fundamental change, a revolution that compares with the rise of the PC. Companies will have to move in time if they want to survive. The introduction of new technologies by traditional media companies occurs while the underlying principles of the IT technologies are changing towards cloud computing.

Conversely, new media companies use cloud computing to explore the creation of alternative business models. The concurrence of these circumstances creates stress within the media industry. The adoption of cloud computing can be a response to the challenges within the media industry.

Bart Bogaert, Ph.D. is the Business Development Executive for the Media and Entertainment Industry in IBM's BeNeLux Innovation & Technology group. He focuses on delivering business value through business Innovation and Technology Innovation. Prior to this role he was leading the Media & Entertainment sales practice in South-West Europe at IBM. Before joining IBM, he was strategy consultant for the Telecommunications Industry at Siemens. Previously, he worked in research and development at the Siemens laboratories in Munich. He has more then 20 years of experience in Information Technology. In parallel the studied over the past years the contention within the content industry due to the IT evolution towards cloud computing. He holds a Ph.D. in Information and Communication sciences (Tilburg, The Netherlands), a Master of Engineering (Ghent, Belgium), and a Master of Science (Ghent, Belgium). He completed successfully the business program at the London Business School (London, United Kingdom) and received the title of IBM Certified Professional. Jaap van den Herik is Professor of Computer Science at Tilburg School of Humanities of the Tilburg University, Tilburg, the Netherlands and and Professor of Law and Computer Science at the Faculty of Law of the Universiteit Leiden, Leiden, The Netherlands. As Scientific Director of TiCC (Tilburg center for Cognition and Communication) he was able to attract many talented researchers. He was supervisor of 58 Ph.D. researchers. His research interests are: computer games, serious games, adaptive agents, neural networks, information retrieval, and intelligent systems for law applications. At the moment he is Chairman of the Board of BIG GRID, Member of the Board of CLARIN-NL, Member of the Board of SECVA, and Member of the Board of the CEPIS Special Interest Network "Legal & Security Issues" (CEPIS LSI) (since 1998). Furthermore he is Editor-in-Chief of the ICGA Journal and Associate Editor of the Entertainment Computing Journal.
