In addition to Courting Pandemonium, Fredrick Barton is the author of the novels The El Cholo Feeling Passes, Black and White on the Rocks, and A House Divided, which won the William Faulkner Prize in fiction. He is also the author of the collection of essays Rowing to Sweden and the jazz opera Ash Wednesday. From 1980-2008, he served as the film critic for the New Orleans weekly, Gambit. His many awards include a Louisiana Arts Prize; the New Orleans Press Club's annual criticism prize 11 times and its highest honor, the Alex Waller Memorial Award; the Stephen T. Victory Award, the Louisiana Bar Association's prize for writing about legal issues; and the Award of Excellence from the Associated Church Press for his feature essay "Breaches of Faith" about recovery efforts in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Rick received his B.A. from Valparaiso University and earned graduate degrees at UCLA and the Writers Workshop at the University of Iowa. Valparaiso honored his lifetime achievements with an honorary Ph.D. in Humane Letters. Rick has been on the English faculty of the University of New Orleans since 1979 where he has served as Dean of Liberal Arts and as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs. He currently serves as Director of the Creative Writing Workshop, UNO's MFA program in imaginative writing, which, with his colleagues, he founded in 1990.
