Cranford (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781161427394)

Cranford is a novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell, which was first published in 1851. The story is set in the fictional town of Cranford, which is based on the author's childhood experiences in Knutsford, Cheshire. The novel follows the lives of a group of women who live in the town, including Miss Matty Jenkyns and her sister Deborah, as they navigate the social and economic changes of the mid-19th century. The book is a series of interconnected stories that explore the lives of the women of Cranford, their relationships with each other, and their interactions with the wider world. The novel is known for its gentle humor, its portrayal of the lives of middle-class women, and its commentary on the changing social and economic landscape of Victorian England. The novel is also notable for its use of a first-person narrator, who is a young woman from outside of Cranford. This narrator provides an outsider's perspective on the town and its inhabitants, allowing the reader to see the quirks and idiosyncrasies of the town's inhabitants through fresh eyes.Overall, Cranford is a charming and insightful novel that offers a unique glimpse into the lives of Victorian women and the social and economic changes of the time. It is a classic of English literature and remains popular with readers today. In the first place, Cranford is in possession of the Amazons; all the holders of houses above a certain rent are women. If a married couple come to settle in the town, somehow the gentleman disappears; he is either fairly frightened to death by being the only man in the Cranford evening parties, or he is accounted for by being with his regiment, his ship, or closely engaged in business all the week in the great neighbouring commercial town of Drumble, distant only twenty miles on a railroad. In short, whatever does become of the gentlemen, they are not at Cranford. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
