Crazy History - Faith and Other Holy Mayhem: Ten True Tales of Belief Unhinged and Miracles Mismanaged (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798271897023)

Crazy History: Faith and Other Holy Mayhem is a sweeping work of literary nonfiction that explores the strange borderland between belief and delusion, tracing ten true stories of faith turned fever, revelation turned revolt, and devotion carried beyond reason. This is a history of religious madness, moral psychology, and the human hunger for meaning that has shaped every civilization-from medieval flagellants and possessed nuns to modern prophets and miracle merchants. It is a journey through the moments when conviction overwhelms conscience and sincerity becomes its own form of salvation.

Across centuries, humanity has sought to explain what reason cannot bear. From the penitents who marched through plague-stricken Europe to the children who set out on crusade believing angels would lead them to Jerusalem, Crazy History reveals how faith transforms under pressure. Drawing from original chronicles, letters, sermons, and modern archives, the book reconstructs each episode not as superstition, but as an emotional architecture-a system for surviving chaos. Through the lenses of theology, psychology, and culture, it examines how belief gives order to terror and how that same order can slip into cruelty.

The stories range from the demonic possessions of seventeenth-century France to the utopian communities of nineteenth-century America and the modern spectacle of televangelists turning charisma into commerce. Each chapter becomes a mirror of the same eternal impulse: to find coherence when the world breaks apart. Whether it is a convent in ecstasy or a congregation in panic, the mystery remains the same-the sincerity of madness, the holiness of human error.

Written with the precision of a historian and the cadence of a novelist, Crazy History situates private rapture within public consequence. It follows the slow evolution of miracle into ideology, revelation into institution, and shows how every age reinvents its own version of the sacred. These are not simply tales of religion, but meditations on attention and power-how crowds believe together, how individuals lose themselves in conviction, and how truth survives the systems built to control it.

Author Bill Johns draws upon sources as varied as Pascal, Weil, and Michel de Certeau, blending historical research with cultural analysis to illuminate the strange continuity between medieval faith and modern fanaticism. The result is both unsettling and compassionate-a portrait of humanity at its most desperate and most creative, reaching for meaning even in its most misguided forms. Johns treats the miracles, the manias, and the movements with the same moral clarity: to believe is human, but to understand belief is the beginning of wisdom. Every chapter reminds the reader that behind every doctrine lies a trembling human need: to know that suffering means something, that pain can be purified, that history is not merely chaos repeating itself.

At its core, Crazy History asks why we continue to build our heavens from the ruins of our mistakes. It invites readers into the haunted spaces of faith, where light and madness blur, and where belief, however flawed, remains the most revealing mirror of the human soul.

To read this book is to walk beside the penitents again-to feel the ache of their sincerity, the peril of their hope, and the terrible beauty of their need to make sense of the invisible. It is a work for those who study history not to find certainty, but to understand compassion; for those who suspect that every miracle, even the false ones, hides a truth about who we are. In a world that still divides itself between the faithful and the skeptical, Crazy History: Faith and Other Holy Mayhem reminds us that the real story lies between them-the place where devotion begins, and reason learns to forgive.
