Curing the Criminal (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025585949)

"Curing the Criminal" provides a comprehensive examination of the early twentieth-century movement toward rehabilitative justice and prison reform. Written by Jesse O. Stutsman, a prominent figure in correctional administration, this work explores the shift from purely punitive measures to a more scientific and humanitarian approach to addressing social deviance. The text delves into the psychological and sociological factors contributing to criminal behavior, advocating for a system that focuses on the individual diagnosis and treatment of offenders rather than mere retribution.

The book covers essential topics such as the history of punishment, the role of the police, the function of the court system, and the internal organization of correctional institutions. Stutsman emphasizes the importance of education, vocational training, and mental health evaluations in the successful reintegration of individuals into society. By analyzing the scientific "cure" for criminality, the work serves as a significant historical document for those interested in the evolution of penology, social work, and the American legal system. "Curing the Criminal" remains a valuable resource for understanding the intellectual foundations of modern correctional philosophy and the ongoing debate regarding the purpose of incarceration and the possibility of reform.
