Cybersecurity Careers for Absolute Beginners: Your Hands-On Path to a SOC Analyst Job (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798190416169)

There are millions of unfilled cybersecurity positions worldwide. Entry-level SOC analyst salaries start at $60,000-$80,000 in North America and rise quickly. The work is remote-friendly, the demand is structural and growing, and a four-year degree is not required.

This book is that pathway.

Cybersecurity Careers for Absolute Beginners is a complete, hands-on guide from zero security background to your first Tier 1 SOC analyst job offer - built around the actual skills employers look for, demonstrated through real lab work, and structured around what the hiring process actually evaluates.

What you will build working through this book:

A functioning home security lab running VirtualBox, Kali Linux, a Windows 10 victim host with Sysmon deployed, and Wazuh SIEM - all free, all on hardware you already own.

Six custom Wazuh detection rules mapped to MITRE ATT&CK techniques including LSASS credential dumping, PowerShell encoded command execution, persistence via registry Run keys, and C2 communication via scheduled tasks.

Complete end-to-end investigations of a phishing attack and a multi-stage domain controller compromise, from initial alert through containment recommendation - written up in the professional incident report format employers use.

Working Python and PowerShell automation scripts: IP enrichment against VirusTotal and AbuseIPDB, Wazuh alert parsing and shift briefing generation, Windows Event Log authentication summaries, Active Directory new account auditing, and IOC blocklist management.

Cloud log investigations across AWS CloudTrail, Microsoft Azure, and Microsoft 365 Unified Audit Log - the three environments that dominate enterprise security monitoring.

A portfolio structured for maximum hiring manager impact: documented investigations, detection rules with ATT&CK coverage map, automation scripts with full documentation, GitHub repository with professional README.

A resume, LinkedIn profile, and cover letter tuned for ATS keyword screening and human reader impact - with the exact bullet point formulas, skill category structures, and portfolio reference language that gets interviews.

The four parts of this book take you from market to offer:

Part One: Entering the Field - The real 2026 SOC job market, what the daily work actually looks like across shift handoffs and alert queues and escalation decisions, and the certification sequence that clears screening without wasting time.

Part Two: The Technical Foundations - Networking fundamentals in the context of log analysis, Windows and Linux host logging with Sysmon configuration, and the MITRE ATT&CK framework applied to real attacker behavior.

Part Three: Hands-On Operations - Seven lab chapters covering SIEM deployment, phishing investigation, cloud log analysis, multi-stage intrusion detection, Python and PowerShell triage automation, and professional incident report writing.

Part Four: Landing the Job - Portfolio construction, resume and LinkedIn optimization, technical and behavioral interview preparation with the specific questions SOC panels ask, and a roadmap for the first ninety days in the role.

Each chapter ends with eight multiple-choice questions covering the material at the depth a Security+ exam or technical interview requires. All answers with explanations are in Appendix A.

This book is for you if:
- You want to break into cybersecurity without a degree or prior IT experience
- You've studied security concepts but lack the hands-on work to show employers
- You want a SOC analyst job, not a general introduction to the field
- You're willing to build a lab, investigate real scenarios, and do the portfolio work
