In this illuminating book, Josh Bonkowsky, a pediatric neurologist, describes how he treats the intriguing children he meets in his Utah clinic. They have mysterious and rare neurological illnesses, which can cause devasting seizures, neurodegeneration, or even symptoms like "dancing eyes, dancing feet" (the signature symptoms of Opsoclonus-Myoclonus Syndrome).
This book tells the story of those children, and their families' struggles, losses, and triumphs. It's also an inspiring look at the revolution in pediatric neurology and personalized medicine, and how it is transforming the lives of children with these disorders. The profound changes in diagnosis and treatment in pediatric neurology, especially in the past five years, offers real hope to young children with life-destroying neurological diseases. It shows what happens when individuals and society choose to lead towards good.
Dr. Josh Bonkowsky is a Professor of Pediatric Neurology at Primary Children's Hospital and the University of Utah. After graduating from Harvard College, he obtained his MD and PhD degrees at the University of California, San Diego, and did Pediatrics and Neurology/Pediatric Neurology training at the University of Utah and Boston Children's Hospital.
Dr. Bonkowsky is both a clinician and a scientist. His focus is on neurogenetic conditions and particularly leukodystrophies, a group of rare, genetic neurological disorders that strike the white matter of the brain. The Bonkowsky Laboratory studies leukodystrophies and is developing new treatments and therapies. On sunny afternoons, Dr. Bonkowsky enjoys trail running and learning to skate ski.
