Joel, Thomas, and their new friend, Kevin, begin their own secret investigation of these tunnels, and almost disappear forever.This story is based around the history of the Crozet, Virginia area, and the train tunnels engineered and built by Claudius Crozet in the mid-1800s. Those tunnels had been closed for over 70 years, but are now being reopened to the public for hiking and exploration.

Alan Carter Thompson is a native of Richmond, Virginia who spent 20 years in the Crozet community as the pastor of one of the local churches. He and his wife have three children who grew up there, attending the local schools and having many an adventure in the rolling hills and mountain views of the Crozet area. The author was fascinated by the story of Claudius Crozet and the amazing engineering feat of the four train tunnels he designed and oversaw. The first time he saw the sealed entrance on the east end of the tunnels, he began imagining possibilities for that long, empty space in the mountain. Some of those visions led to this story.
