The remote valleys and wind-swept moors that lie between England and Scotland are splendid walking country, but in previous centuries they provided shelter to reivers and war bands who swept down to loot and steal, then retreated to the empty spaces where they were safe from pursuit. I have explored these hills and valleys and can picture in my mind the scene of my hero's latest exploits. I have also met many of the characters in this book - or, at least, their modern counterparts: spoiled brats, heartless conmen, and supercilious toffs. How I wish that I had George Crandall's authority to deal with evil-doers!
