Democracy and Leadership (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781025591827)

"Democracy and Leadership" is a profound exploration of the intersection between political systems and the moral character of those who lead them. In this seminal work of political philosophy, Irving Babbitt presents a rigorous critique of modern democratic trends, distinguishing between the sentimental humanitarian impulse and a more disciplined, ethical humanism. Babbitt argues that for a democracy to survive and flourish, it must be anchored in a true sense of leadership that recognizes the necessity of inner restraint and historical continuity.

Throughout the text, Babbitt contrasts the expansion of state power with the cultivation of individual character, suggesting that true progress is found not in mechanical social reforms but in the spiritual and ethical standards of the citizenry. He examines the influences of various philosophical traditions, offering a compelling defense of constitutionalism and the "inner check" as essential safeguards against the potential for democratic tyranny. This work remains a cornerstone of 20th-century thought, providing a timeless meditation on the challenges of maintaining order, liberty, and justice in a mass society. It invites readers to reconsider the foundations of modern governance and the essential role of the individual in the health of the body politic.
